To access the refuge, drive your vehicle through the abandoned mining roads. Some sections require four-wheel drive vehicles. Some areas of the Refuge are more than three hours from the nearest highway. Visiting the Refuge during the summer can be very hot and dry, so bring plenty of water and let someone know when you are planning to return. Alternatively, you may want to plan your visit so that you can see the many bird species, and enjoy the beauty of the desert.
