This is the ultimate way to enjoy speed near or in the mountains. Imagine driving a Modified, Short Course Stock Car, Grand Am Cup, or even a Funny Car around this mammoth 2.4 mile course. But you can do it all on one weekend – come race at Cocopah! Our weekly races can be found at Friday Night Thunderbowl (Golf Ball), Saturday Night Silverado (Bronze Slugger), and Sunday Night Atomic (Funny Car). Each race features unique terrain like wooded sections and dirt ovals that will test your driving skills. We also host special events such as our June Classic Speed Weekend which features three days of action with friendlies on Friday and Saturday, qualifying on Sunday, and five races on Sunday.
The entire track is dirt and packed with all sorts of obstacles. You’ll pass through a tunnel and then into a staging area where the cars are prepped for the race. From there, it’s straight-out racing through a series of turns and elevation changes to a party-like finish in the dirt.
The entry is simple. First, find a place to race. We recommend the back straight at the top of the track as it offers a great view of the whole place. Cocopah Speedway Yuma’s traditional dirt oval racing series is back and better than ever! With up to 240 cars running each weekend, the action is fast, furious and spills over the edge. You’ll drive around the entire 2.4 mile track, with sections that are as wide as 25 meters and others as tight as a race track. At the end of each lap, you’ll go through a rollover gate that sends your car into the air like a tire with a puncture. Then, you’ll have about a 180 degree turn to make your way back to the starting gate.
Cocopah’s unique layout gives each track approximately 50 total turns. That means there are a lot of places to go, a lot of places to look, and a lot of places to crash! And since each dirt oval is just over 2 miles long, you’re not only racing against the clock but also the clock in your brain.
The layout of Cocopah Speedway Yuma is based on the type of racing you’ll do. There are two dirt ovals, each with a 20-lap race. The first is a large traditional dirt oval with a 2.4 mile track. The second is a smaller dirt oval with a length of just over 1 mile. The tightest track in the series is the 1/4-mile course. However, the tightest race that you can do is the 13-lap sprint.
The Mighty Bump is the most challenging section of the track and is typically the first time you’ll experience the track. This bump is the first real challenge you’ll face on the track and can be difficult for even the most experienced racecar driver. If you’re struggling with it, you might try going a little wider, but if you’re going for the speed, you need to stay inside the track as much as possible. See more in our next article.
The course at Cocopah Speedway is a combination of road and track. It’s primarily a race track but has a few corners that are quite wide, including the long right-hander and the tight left-handers. It’s a great course if you’re looking for a rougher run, as it features a few mud areas and some hills to contend with. The main thing to watch out for is the numerous puddles and watery conditions on the track.
If you’re racing a full-blown speed machine, you’re going to love how fast this track is. The top speed of the cars here is around 240 mph, which can make this one of the fastest tracks in the country! However, since the cars are so slow, there’s a good chance for you to cause some damage if you keep your wits about you. You’ll have to drive carefully though, as there are plenty of hazards you can trip over or get hit by. You’ll also have to watch out for the back-side of the cars, as they’ll be coming at you from the opposite direction.
